About Lan
Lan Shen is a Grade 11 student at Auburn Drive High School with a passion for music that began after moving from Shandong, China to Nova Scotia at age five. A dedicated double bassist and pianist, he studies bass with Lena Turofsky and Megan Chandler, and piano and theory with Dr. Lorna Wanzell at the Maritime Conservatory.
Lan is an accomplished performer and competitor, serving as Principal Bassist of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra and a soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia’s 2025 Young Peoples Concert. His accolades include multiple Kiwanis Music Festival awards, the Provincial Intermediate Strings title, and the National Music Festival Developing Artist (Strings) award.
In addition to his achievements on double bass, Lan is pursuing his RCM Level 10 Piano Diploma and Level 9 Theory Diploma, with a focus on classical repertoire and an enthusiasm for contemporary, jazz, and tango styles. He believes in personalizing his teaching to each student’s strengths and individuality, aiming to inspire joy and curiosity through music.
